The 2019 Maruti Wagon R will launch on 23 January 2019 and will launch with bigger dimensions, higher safety equipment, and as many as four engine options. One of these motors will be the K12M 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that powers many bigger Maruti cars, including Swift, Dzire and Baleno.

The introduction of the bigger petrol engine, along with the bigger dimensions, will put the new Wagon R directly in front of the Tata Tiago in the budget hatchback battle. Our Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago comparison will help you decide if the new-gen tallboy stands a chance in front of the successful Tata small car –

2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago – Comparison of Design & Interior

The 2019 Maruti Wagon R has the same tallboy design as its predecessors. This should lead to a roomy interior with a lot of headspace for the tall passengers. However, when compared to the present model, it doesn’t have a neutral design. While Maruti would be hoping that people would soon get used to a somewhat odd front fascia, the new car won’t win any design awards.

The Tata Tiago looks like any other conventional small car and has a pleasing design that goes down well with a vast majority of the audience. However, something that just might work in the Wagon R’s favour to some extent is the freshness of its looks. The Tiago is already a few years old and has started requiring a facelift.

Until the mid-cycle update arrives, it will be the Wagon R that will look fresher. Still, due to the somewhat unconventional design of the new Maruti hatchback, let’s just say there’s no clear winner in this round of our 2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago comparison.

The interior of the new Wagon R will carry a dual-tone beige-black theme with the lighter colour tone enjoying a dominance over the darker shade. The dashboard has a modern design and the top-spec model, for the first time in the brand’s history, gets a touchscreen infotainment unit that is likely to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The touch-sensitive system on the Wagon R doesn’t seem to be the same SmartPlay system that is available on models like the Swift but it should offer the same features.

Also, thanks to the upcoming safety norms, the new model offers more safety features than the current version. All the variants will get a driver’s side airbag, ABS, ISOFIX child seat restraints, speed-sensing door lock, impact-sensing door unlock, high-speed alert, and front seatbelt warning. Also, the top-end trims will even get a front passenger-side airbag and remote central locking. However, spy pics indicate that the new speedo cluster doesn’t get a tachometer and instead comes with Ritz-like round dials.

The interior of the Tata Tiago will also get all the above safety features to become compliant with the upcoming safety norms. The newly introduced XZ+ variant even gets a touchscreen unit with Android Auto but there is no Apple CarPlay. Also, the cabin doesn’t have the feeling of airiness that the Wagon R offers.

Even the boot of the new Maruti model is expected to be bigger than that of the Tiago. This means the former becomes the winner of this part of our 2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago comparison.

The 2019 Maruti Wagon R will be available in four engine variants – 1.0-litre petrol, 1.0-litre CNG+petrol, 1.0-litre LPG+petrol, 1.2-litre petrol. The smaller petrol engine option comes from the current model but gains the LPG kit. The 1.2-litre engine is the same 1.2-litre K12M unit as the Maruti Swift. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed AMT. The 1.0-litre engine, in the petrol-only guise, produces 67 PS, while the 1.2-litre motor outputs 82 PS.

In comparison, the Tata Tiago is available in 1.05-litre diesel and 1.2-litre petrol engine options. Transmission options for the latter include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. Its petrol engine delivers 85 PS while the diesel engine offers 70 PS. While having a diesel engine might be advantageous for some, the fast dropping popularity of diesel-powered small cars might negate this. Also, with the increasing demand for CNG and LPG cars, the Wagon R might actually emerge as the ultimate winner of this part of 2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago comparison.

2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago – Comparison of Mileage

2019 Maruti Wagon R vs Tata Tiago Mileage
New Maruti Wagon R Tata Tiago
Option-1 1.0 L Petrol- 24 kmpl (expected) 1.2 L Petrol- 23.84 kmpl (ARAI)
Option-2 1.2 L Petrol – 23 kmpl (expected) 1.05 L Diesel – 27.28 kmpl (ARAI)

While the mileage figures of the new Wagon R aren’t out yet, we can safely give a rough estimate of the fuel efficiency figures for both the petrol variants. The 1.0-litre version should deliver up to 24 kmpl, which will make it more efficient than the Tiago as well as the current version. The 1.2-litre petrol motor for the new Wagon R delivers 22 kmpl on the Swift and with the new tallboy being lighter, should easily offer 23 kmpl. The mileage remains the same for both manual and AMT options.

The Tata Tiago is ahead of the new Wagon R when it comes to the running costs. The petrol engine delivers an ARAI-certified mileage of 23.84 kmp, which is higher than what we are expecting from the bigger engine variant of the Wagon R. But it’s the diesel engine that is the highlight here.

It delivers 27.29 kmpl as per ARAI, which, coupled with the lower cost of diesel, makes it much more economical to run than both the versions of the Wagon R. However, let’s not forget that the diesel model will be much costlier than both the petrol versions of the Wagon R. Still, it’s the Tata model that’s the winner of this part of our 2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago comparison.

2019 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 vs Tata Tiago – Comparison Verdict

Design – Design is a matter of personal choice and a lot many people might like or dislike the looks of the new Wagon R. One thing, however, that is for sure is that it looks fresher than the Tiago, which is already a few years old. But it’s the Tiago whose design has a wider appeal.

Interior –  In terms of features, both the vehicles will be at par with each other but the Wagon R will have a more spacious cabin, particularly a higher headroom. Hence, the new tallboy wins this round of our comparison.

Specifications – The K12M engine for the new tallboy will help it become a strong rival to the Tiago while the CNG and LPG options for the 1.0-litre engine will help it counter the low running costs of the diesel version. Also, diesel-powered small cars are a fast-dying breed, which makes the Wagon R the outright winner of this part of our comparison.

Mileage – Going only by the figures, the Tiago wins this comparison hands down as its diesel engine delivers a stellar fuel economy of more than 27 kmpl as per ARAI.

VERDICT – The Tata Tiago has always been a well-sorted car but the arrival of the 1.2-litre engine option on the new Wagon R should help it give the Tata model a run for its money.
