The 2019 Mahindra Thar will be larger, safer than the current model, it will have CJ5-inspired styling underpinned by a new platform
The 2019 Mahindra Thar, which is the full model update for the iconic lifestyle SUV, has been spied once again. The next-gen Thar has been spotted undergoing road tests in Coimbatore, which has been a proven testing ground for many upcoming vehicles of late. The latest batch of spy images reveals the new model’s wider body and the revised front-end to a large extent.
The 2019 Mahindra Thar will retain the distinctive no-nonsense off-roader looks but at the same time, will have a new design that will look more modern than the current model. At the front-end, it will look a lot like the Jeep CJ5 and will have a 7-slat grille that will be surrounded by circular headlamps and traditionally-styled LED indicators positioned on the front fenders.
The windshield of the 2019 Mahindra Thar, from the looks of it, is wider and can’t be dropped down like in the current iteration. The test model reveals that the new model features a fabric top, side steps, and a side-hinged tailgate.
The 2019 Mahindra Thar is said to be underpinned by an all-new chassis that will comply with the upcoming crash safety standards put forth by the government of India. The new model will even feature ABS with EBD, front airbags, ABS with EBD, speed-sensing door locks, and high-speed warning alert on all the trims.
Powering the 2019 Mahindra Thar will be a new BSVI-compliant engine that is likely to offer a better output than the current motor. It will come mated to a five-speed manual transmission that will send power to all four wheels through a four-wheel drive system with locking differentials. Rather, from the looks of it, the new model could even benefit from an independent suspension at the front.
The 2019 Mahindra Thar is likely to make its public debut in a pre-production stage at the 2020 Auto Expo in February next year. It will likely command a slight premium over the current model. Its only traditional rival will be the Force Gurkha.
