2018 BMW F850GS comes equipped with a  853 cc parallel twin engine making 95 horsepower and 92 Nm of peak torque

BMW unveiled a couple of new midsize twins at the 2017 edition of EICMA in Milan, Italy – the 2018 F750GS and F850GS. With a displacement of 853 cc, both the motorcycles are now larger in proportion than the older F700GS and F800GS respectively.

The new BMW F750GS comprises of a revised chassis with sheet-fabricated parts while the top portion, front and rear of the powertrain are clamped together for increased torsional rigidity.

BMW-F850-GS-3.jpgThere is also a new transmission composing of an anti-hop clutch and Gear Shift Assist Pro for quick shifting of gears. The increase in 55 cc of displacement has been achieved by enlarging the bore to 84 mm and lengthening stroke by 77 mm.

The old 360-degree crankshaft and its oscillating-mass-based balance system are replaced in favour of a new crank with 90-degree-offset throws and dual balance shafts. This time around the firing interval is 270/450 degrees while the compression is up from 12:1 to 12.7.

The BMW F850GS has been introduced in India at the ongoing Auto Expo 2018 where BMW has launched several motorcycles including the F750GS

Both F750GS and F850GS will be sold as completely built units (CBUs) and the pricing stands at Rs. 13.7 lakh (ex-showroom). The deliveries will kick start by mid-2018.

On the BMW F 850 GS, the same 853 cc engine used in the F750GS makes higher power and torque as it develops 95 hp (up from 85 hp) and 92 Nm of torque.

Both the new F750GS and the F850GS are equipped with long-travel front and rear suspension, and Dynamic ESA is an option. Wheelbases now span a slightly lengthier 61.4 and 62.7 inches.

Steering geometry is more relaxed, increasing to 27 and 28 degrees from the previous 26 degrees. Consequently, trail grew from 3.5 inches in both cases to 4.1 inches on the 750 and 5.0 inches for the 850.

The 2018 BMW F850GS utilises wire-spoked wheels with 90/90-21 front and 150/70-17 rear semi-knob tyres. As for braking, twin 305 mm front rotors and two-piston floating caliper featuring ABS Pro are standard.

It also features TFT instrumentation incorporating an Intelligent Emergency Call app – first for its segment. It gets a new 43 mm USD front fork as well.

2018 BMW F850GS Design

There is a small windshield deflecting air away with a vented design that helps in re-integrating smoothly with the slipstream. The fairing and fuel tank design is chunky but tad less swoopy. The 2018 version’s bench seat is replaced by a tiered saddle bringing well-defined break between pilot and pillion.

BMW-F850-GS-5.jpgThe JC handles and flip-up as well as subframe-mount footpegs allow support for contact points. The tail light is rather blocky apart from a pair of LED turn signals taking care of the rearward lighting. The rest of rearward equipment includes a mud flap/plate holder combination.
