2017 World Car of the Year Awarded to Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar’s first SUV F-Pace has also won the ‘World Car Design of the Year’ award; beats Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Tiguan

British luxury automaker Jaguar’s first-ever SUV F-Pace has won the award of ‘2017 World Car of the Year’ and ‘World Car Design of the Year’ at the ongoing New York International Motor Show. In the way to become the ‘World Car of the Year’ the British luxury SUV, which is the fastest selling jaguar vehicle, has beaten the German rivals like Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Tiguan.

A total of 23 cars were competing for the title and very interestingly, all three finalists were the SUVs. This certainly indicates towards the growing popularity and demand of the SUVs and crossovers across the world. Another interesting fact is that the automakers are showing keen interest towards producing SUVs, even those brands which were not known for making SUVs before. Some of the examples are the Jaguar F-Pace, Maserati Levante, Bentley Bentayga etc.

The prestigious ‘World Car of the Year’ award is given after the jury panel consisting 75 automobile journalists across 23 countries around the world choose the best car. The World Car awards are given in six different categories.

Previous winners of this ‘World Car of the Year’ award since 2005 include models like Audi A6, BMW 3-Series, Lexus LS460, Mazda Demio, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen Up, Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Mazda MX-5.

While F-Pace won the above mentioned two awards, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class won 2017 ‘World Luxury Car’ award. It beat the Volvo S90 / V90 and BMW 5-Series. Apart from that, Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman bagged the 2017 ‘World Performance Car’ award after beating Audi R8 Spyder and McLaren 570S.

Toyota Prius Prime became the ‘World Green Car’ leaving behind the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model X. BMW’s unique i3 won the award of ‘World Urban Car’ and it has beaten the Ignis, the Maruti Suzuki vehicle launched in India few months back.
