Speaking about the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, it has been enjoying the status of most successful and most popular sub-four metre compact sedan in the domestic market for quite long time. Despite tough competition, the Swift Dzire has managed to stay on top of the segment.

The third generation model of the car borrows several design cues from its hatchback sibling, just like before. But the distinctiveness is also very much visible.

The new generation model of the compact sedan sheds the Swift badge from its name. Such is the case, it has been christened as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire now. It sports plenty of chrome garnishing and horizontal slats. The front bumper gets neatly positioned fog lamps at both ends, with blackened surrounding and chrome trim highlighting them.

At the side profile, the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes with new design alloy wheels, subtle character lines and blackened glass area. Also, it comes with turn indicator integrated ORVMs. The side profile appears different looking than the old model and gives the car a suave look. Moving to the rear profile, the third generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire receives minor changes. It sports compact slightly different looking taillights, a horizontal chrome bar joining the taillights and a chunky looking bumper along with the registration enclosure delivering a well crafted vibe.

The front fascia comes with a completely new design incorporating sharper new headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, a new larger front grille with black horizontal slats. The front bumper too is new and makes the hatchback’s front fascia attractive with the blackened air intake and well positioned round shaped fog lamps.

The fully blackened A and B pillar along with partially blackened C pillar gives it a fully floating roof design, which makes it very distinctive looking. The rear passenger door handle has been re-positioned and moved to the C pillar instead of the conventional position.

Overall, the both the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the new generation Swift come different looking from each other. The differences are visible at the front grille and front bumper. The positioning of the rear passenger door handle in Dzire is different than Swift. So it can be easily said, that despite sharing several similarities both the cars come with unique design characteristics.

Since the new Dzire is based on the Baleno’s platform, the height is reduced by 40 mm while the wheelbase is increased by 20 mm. The width of the vehicle has gone up by 40 mm and it will translate into more cabin room as the shoulder room up front and rear goes up by 20 mm and 30 mm respectively.

The fuel tank capacity has been reduced to 37 litres from 42 litres and the rear leg room has increased by 55 mm. The petrol MT weighs at 860 kg and 895 kg for the petrol AMT version while the diesel MT tips the weighing scale at 955 kg and 990 kg for the AMT. Due to the significantly lowered kerb weight, the handling and driving dynamics are said to have improved by a large amount.

The new generation Maruti Suzuki Swift would come sporting a length of 3,850 mm, width of 1,695 mm, height of 1,530 mm and wheelbase of 2,430 mm. The ground clearance, fuel tank capacity and the boot space capacity of the two cars are expected to be same.

Therefore, the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes 145 mm longer than the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Swift, while the compact sedan is 40 mm wider than its sibling and in terms of height, the hatchback appears 15 mm taller than Dzire. The wheelbase of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire compact sedan is just 20 mm longer than the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Swift.

Both the third generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Swift come sporting three spoke multi-function steering wheel with several control buttons mounted on it. But, the Dzire gets an unique flat bottom steering with faux wooden touch offering a premium sporty feel. The Swift sports a flat bottom steering wheel, but no faux wooden finish is there.

Being longer and having a larger wheelbase, the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire offers more leg space to the occupants compared to its hatchback sibling. Overall, despite being siblings and sharing couple of similarities, the two car’s interior are quite different from each other. But, one thing is clear. The new Maruti Suzuki Dzire compact sedan would retain the same engine and transmission available as the current model. The proven 1.2-litre petrol engine and Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine are the propellers. The petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while a 4-speed automatic transmission also on offer. The diesel engine on the other hand is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and an AGS is also on offer.

The petrol engine is well capable of churning out 84.3 PS of peak power at 6,000 rpm, while the peak torque amount for this car is 115 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The diesel engine on the other hand is capable of pumping out 75 PS of peak power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of peak torque at 2,000 rpm. The fuel efficiency delivered by the petrol manual variant is 22 kmpl while the petrol automatic variant returns the same. The diesel variant on the other hand delivers 28.4 kmpl of fuel efficiency – both are class leading and significant improvement over the outgoing Dzire.

The new Dzire could also come with a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged engine, while an indigenously built 1.5-litre diesel engine is also on card, but that would be introduced to the car at later stage after being introduced and evaluated in the Ciaz and Ertiga.

Interestingly, the Maruti Suzuki Swift too shares the same engine with its compact hatchback sibling and the upcoming model too is expected to retain the same engine lineup like the current Swift. It that case, the 1.2-litre petrol engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine sourced from Fiat will be available in the upcoming model too. However, on the transmission front, the existing Swift doesn’t come with any automatic gearbox or any AMT (Maruti fondly calls it AGS).

Apart from retaining the same engines in the new model, the diesel variant could get an AMT, while the manual gearbox will be available in both petrol and diesel models. Power output of the petrol engine could be same 84.3 PS at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque output could be 115 Nm produced at 4,000 rpm. On the diesel front, the 1.3-litre unit generates same power and torque output like the compact sedan.

Meanwhile, the new generation Maruti Suzuki Swift could come with SHVS mild-hybrid system introduced to the diesel engine, just like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Ertiga. Also, a 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine could be introduced to the car producing a 102 PS of peak power and 150 Nm of peak torque. Apart from that, the 1.5-litre diesel engine, Maruti is developing would be introduced to the hatchback at later stage in future.

Both the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the new Swift will come featuring impressive safety features offering improved protection to the occupants. Both the Dzire and the Swift get reverse parking camera, seatbelt warning, engine immobilizer, etc. The body structure of the new generation compact sedan and the hatchback will be much stronger and rigid, capable to absorb more energy in case of any impact.

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Swift too, will be priced bit higher than the current model. It could be priced between Rs. 5.10 lakh and Rs. 8.1 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Both new versions are believed to justify the increase in premium.

The space could be increased in an attempt to offer more comfort to the occupants. However, retaining the same engine lineup is not what we like but in the years to come there are speculations that Maruti’s in-house built engines will come into existence.

The company could consider increasing the power and torque output along with improving the fuel efficiency as well. Considering both the cars sit in different segments, the new generation models will more likely take the game up in their respective segments and come as top ones, just like the current models.

With everything new on offer and competitive pricing along with the Maruti Suzuki brand name, both the cars are predictably going to retain their supremacy in the below Rs. 10 lakh price range. The Dzire promises to be equally sporty while being more spacious and feature-packed compared to the upcoming Swift.
