Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is one of the most popular compact sedans in India for a long time now. Based on the highly successful hatchback Swift, the sedan comes with a stylish appearance and upmarket features. Now the automaker has launched the new generation model of this car and it looks pretty much different compared to the old version.

Maruti Suzuki has rebadged the car as Dzire as the Swift name has been removed. Despite being positioned at the top in the highly competitive compact sedan segment of Indian auto market, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has several rivals. Among these rivals one is the Hyundai Xcent, which has recently received facelift.

Both the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the refreshed Hyundai Xcent come incorporating significant design updates compared to their respective predecessors. The former model is based on the global-spec fourth-gen Swift hatchback while the latter reminisces the Euro-spec i10 facelift and its India-spec Grand i10 cousin. Mechanical changes and interior add-ons have been introduced as well, as the duo target to snatch even the slightest of advantage that would attract customers. 2017 Maruti Dzire vs 2017 Hyundai Xcent Facelift Exterior

The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes borrowing several design elements from its sibling Swift’s new-gen model. The front grille gets significant update with a large hexagonal shape and horizontal slats are there, while the headlamps come sharper than before and incorporating projector lamps along with integrated LED daytime running lights. The front grille gets chrome treatment to add zing to it. The fog lamps sit at the blackened housing and the air intake looks larger.

The side profile of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Dzire receives some changes too. It gets subtle character line, new design alloy wheels, body coloured door handles and turn indicator integrated ORVMs. The newly design alloy wheels enhance the sub-four meter sedan’s sporty appeal further. Interestingly, the sedan gets conventional rear passenger door handles while the new Swift has them positioned at the C pillar. Rear fascia of the car receives some changes as well. It comes with compact and wraparound taillights and a revised bumper.

On the other hand, the all new Hyundai Xcent facelift too dons significant updates compared to its predecessor. It has been designed in line with its hatchback sibling Grand i10, which sports a new guise as well. But the distinctive is also visible clearly. The new Xcent gets a larger front grille with plenty of chrome garnishing and horizontal slats. The sharp and laid back headlamps appear slightly tweaked. The front bumper comes pretty muscular and they get inverted L shaped LED daytime running lights flanked by horizontal shape fog lamps.

At the side profile, the new Hyundai Xcent facelift gets turn indoicator integrated wing mirrors. Apart from that, it gets new alloy wheels, subtle character lines and black cladding enhancing the visual appeal further. Rear fascia gets compact wraparound taillights, a chrome bar connecting them, a refreshed bumper and restyled boot as well.

So far, both the cars appear pretty attractive with the refreshed appearance. However, Maruti Suzuki Dzire’s flowing aesthetic design catches attention more easily.

2017 Maruti Dzire vs 2017 Hyundai Xcent Facelift Dimension

Dimensionally, the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire measures 3,995 mm in length, 1,735 mm in width, 1,515 mm in height and it has a wheelbase of 2,450 mm. It gets a ground clearance of 163 mm and the boot storage capacity for the car is 378-litre.

The 2017 Hyundai Xcent facelift on the other hand measures 3,995 mm in length, 1,660 mm in width, 1,520 mm in height and it sports a wheelbase of 2,425 mm. The compact sedan also comes with a bootspace of 407 litres and it has a fuel tank of 43 litres and the ground clearance for this compact sedan 165 mm.

Both the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire and 2017 Hyundai Xcent facelift bear same length of 3,995 mm. The Swift Dzire is wider than Xcent, while the Hyundai vehicle is 5 mm taller than new Dzire. The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire gets a revised interior. It appears more upmarket and feature-rich compared to the previous model. It sports a new sporty flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel and a dual-pod instrument cluster with a new digital MID. The dashboard and steering wheel come with faux-wood finish.

A large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and SmartPlay enhances the premiumness of the car. Powertrain and Mileage

The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes featuring the same petrol and diesel engines under its hood like its predecessor. It gets a 1.2-litre K-Series VVT petrol engine and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. Power and torque output of these engines remain same.

The petrol engine under the hood of the new Dzire churns out 84 PS of peak power at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. On the other hand, the diesel unit kicks out 75 PS of peak power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of peak torque at 2,000 rpm. The petrol engine is available with a five-speed manual gearbox and there is a 4-speed automatic unit as well, while on the diesel front, the Dzire comes with a five-speed manual transmission and an AMT that is called as AGS (Auto Gear Shift).

The Indo-Japanese automaker is considering a SHVS mild-hybrid technology with the new Dzire, but that would arrive later. In that case, it will be the same SHVS technology combined with the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine already available in the Ertiga MPV and Ciaz mid-size sedan. Apart from that, this car may receive a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol engine as well, but that too will be offered at later stage. The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire delivers class-leading fuel efficiency of 22 kmpl and 28.4 kmpl for petrol and diesel models respectively.

The facelifted Hyundai Xcent compact sedan comes with a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine under the hood and the oil burner is a 1.1-litre CRDi engine. The petrol engine is capable of kicking out 83 PS of peak power at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. On the other hand, the 1.2-litre CRDi diesel engine pumps out 75 PS of peak power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of peak torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,500 rpm.

Transmission duty in the Hyundai Xcent is done by a 5-speed manual gearbox and there is a 4-speed automatic unit as well, but the AT is offered with petrol model only. Fuel efficiency for this compact sedan ranges between 20.14 kmpl and 17.36 kmpl for the petrol manual and petrol automatic variants respectively, while the diesel model returns 25.4 kmpl. With improved fuel economy and lowered kerb weight, the Dzire looks to be the superior model in this respect.

The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire gets safety features like dual front airbags, ISOFIX mounts and ABS with EBD as standard. The 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes priced between Rs. 5.45 lakh and Rs. 9.41 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The all-new Hyundai Xcent facelift on the other handis priced between Rs. 5.38 lakh and Rs. 8.42 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi), depending on the variants. Therefore, both the compact sedans are priced very aggressively against each other but the top-end versions of the Dzire are pricier due to additional features.

Both the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the 2017 Hyundai Xcent facelift compact sedans come with attractive design and well equipped interior packed with upmarket quality materials and exciting features. Maruti Suzuki Dzire is clearly the bestselling compact sedan in India and the new generation model will only help in maintaining its role on top while Hyundai Xcent facelift aims to grab as much as possible market share in the segment giving the Dzire tough competition.

In terms of design, both the cars come very practical and appealing. The new Maruti Suzuki Dzire looks bit sportier and more stylish compared to its Korean rival. The facelifted Hyundai Xcent on the other hand, gets an unique front fascia which certainly puts the car on par with its Indo-Japanese competitor.

In terms of interior features, the 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes more stylish than the Xcent facelift.
