The third-generation Skoda Superb has been launched for the Indian market at a starting price tag of Rs. 22.68 lakh. The all new model is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform which makes the premium sedan more lighter and help offer a longer wheelbase. Thus, the new Superb packs spacious cabin along with added equipment list, revisions to the engine line-up for better driveability and fuel economy, Skoda’s latest design language, etc. The new Škoda Superb is the company’s first model to be offered with adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) with Driving Mode Select. The third generation model has hit the Indian market at a starting price of Rs.22.68 lakh for the base variant and Rs. 29.36 lakh for the top-of-the-line model.

2016 Skoda Superb Engine and Performance:

For better fuel efficiency and performance, the 2016 Skoda Superb has received tweaks to the engine line-up comprising of 1.8-litre TSI 16V DOHC four-pod petrol and 2.0-litre TDI CR 16V DOHC four-cylinder turbo diesel powertrains. Whilst the premium sedan is powered by various choices of engines in international markets, both the aforementioned units will be carried over from the outgoing Superb for India.

The revised 1.8-litre TSI petrol motor produces a maximum power output of 180 PS between 5,100 and 6,200 rpm and peak torque of 320 Nm for the manual and 250 Nm for the automatic variants. The diesel mill pumps out 177 PS between 3,600 and 4,000 rpm and has a peak torque figure of 350 Nm between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. The petrol engine comes mated with a fully-synchronized six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG automatic with manual Tiptronic gear changing. The diesel motor transfers power to all four wheels through a six-speed DSG automatic with Tiptronic manual gear changing. Compared to the outgoing model, the new Superb produces 20 PS more power from petrol and 37 PS more power from the diesel engine.

2016 Skoda Superb Mileage:

The new Skoda Superb comes with a claimed mileage of 14.67 kmpl for 1.8-litre TSI petrol automatic and 14.12 kmpl for the petrol manual. The 2.0-litre diesel should be capable of returning a fuel economy of 18.19 kmpl.

2016 Skoda Superb Dimensions:

The new generation Superb measures 28 mm longer, 47mm wider and has 80 mm more wheelbase than the outgoing model. Therefore the total length is 4,861 mm, width is 1,864 mm, wheelbase is 2,841 mm with the height stands at 1,483 mm. More crucially, it weighs 75 kilograms less than its predecessor thanks to the lighter architecture it’s built on. It accommodates a normal storage capacity of 625 litres and 1,760 litres with rear seats folded down and gross weight of just over two tonnes.

For the Indian market, Skoda Octavia was the first model to receive the Czech brand’s latest design language and the Superb follows those lines quite perfectly. Built on the Volkswagen Group’s flexible MQB platform that also underpins the VW Passat and Audi A3, the new Superb shares about 50 per cent of the components with the Volkswagen Passat.

Drawing design inspirations from the Vision C Concept showcased at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the new Superb gets an aggressive appeal alongside boasting a bolder stance with sharper body panels.

The front fascia has been fitted with the signature wide butterfly grille that sits in the middle of sleeker 3D headlamps angled to perfection. The bumpers have been more sculpted than ever with horizontal LED fog lamps accentuate the appeal.

The bonnet lines look more purposeful besides sharper character lines stretching straight to the rear through the side profile. It gets elegant electrically adjustable Outside Rear View Mirrors, smooth creases emphasising its longer body, slopping roofline and newly designed larger 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. The rear end has received so much treatment compared to the outgoing model and it looks lot similar to the Volkswagen Passat. The two-piece C-shaped LED tail lights, new rear bumper and boot lid add to its high-end presence.

The long list of interior features include a new eight-inch Smartlink touchscreen infotainment system based on VW’s MIB Technology (Modularer Infotainment-Baukasten) with triple-zone climate control, premium leather upholstery, heated seats, 12-speaker CANTON audio system, multi-spoke steering wheel with buttons for various controls, neatly laid out centre console, upgraded dashboard, AC vents and dials.

The third generation Skoda Superb also features Black Decor with Ambient lighting, power-adjustable front seat with memory and lumbar support, boss button and 12-way adjustable driver seat, panoramic sun roof, parking sensors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto facilities, automatic headlamps and wipers among several others.

The safety featutres equipped in the 2016 Skoda Superb are nine-airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TC/TCS), Engine immobilizer, remote central locking, Child Safety Lock, tyre pressure monitoring with optional Rear Traffic Alert, Traffic Jam Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise control, Lane Assist and Fatigue detection.
