Maruti Ciaz and Ertiga will soon receive a new diesel engine option in the form of the in-house developed 1.5-litre DDiS 225
The highly awaited in-house-developed 1.5-litre diesel engine from Maruti Suzuki is about to debut. The new engine has been codenamed E15A and will be available on the Maruti Ciaz and Ertiga. The new engine will be sold alongside the D13A 1.3-litre Fiat engine until BSVI emission norms kick in next year.
A leaked document shows that both the Maruti Ciaz and the Maruti Ertiga will receive this engine in the same state of tune. The new motor will be promoted with the ‘DDiS 225’ badge. It displaces 1,498 cc and produces a maximum power of 95.17 PS at 4,000 rpm against a peak torque of 225 Nm at 1,500-2,500 rpm.
For now, the new engine will be available in the BSIV-compliant state but will be upgraded to meet the BSVI norms next year. The new 1.5-litre DDiS 225 engine will not feature the company’s SHVS mild-hybrid technology.
Also, the entry-level grades of the Maruti Ciaz and the Ertiga are likely to miss out on the new engine option. This will help the carmaker continue to keep the starting price of the diesel variant from witnessing a huge hike.
Our sources inform us that the new E15A 1.5-litre engine will be high on refinement due to a dual mass flywheel. Also, the company has made efforts to keep the NVH levels low. The 0.8-litre diesel engine that debuted on the Celerio was criticized for its crudeness but this time the company doesn’t look in a mood to take any sort of chance.
Other than the Maruti Ciaz and the Ertiga, the new 1.5-litre E15A diesel engine is likely to make it to models like the S-Cross in due course of time. Eventually, it will completely replace the 1.3-litre D13A diesel engine due to the latter’s inability to meet the BSVI emission norms.
