​​UM Motorcycles To Manufacture 300cc To 700cc Bikes In India

​​The brand will also be setting up a new production facility in India that will have a capacity of at least 1.20 lakh units per year

UM Motorcycles has recently announced that it will start manufacturing bikes in range of 300cc to 700cc in India. The brand has stated that under a span of next three years, all such motorcycles will be developed and made in the country. For this purpose, UM Motorcycles is also planning to set up a new production facility along with a new R&D centre in the state of Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu. The company currently sells four models in India, all having an engine displacement of 279cc.

UM Motorcycles already has a factory in Uttarakhand and it expects to achieve a sale of 25,000 to 28,000 units by the end of the current financial year. In the last 10 months, the brand has sold over 10,000 units in India.

UM Motorcycles will invest close to Rs. 100 crore in the setting up of its upcoming production facility. The said plant will have a production capacity of 1.20 lakh to 1.50 lakh units per year.

Regarding the company’s upcoming plans for India, Jose Villegas, Director, UM India has stated that the country is gradually becoming a hub for premium bikes and UM International is optimistic about India not only as a market but also as a platform for global operations.

UM Motorcycles further stated that within a short period of time, the company has achieved 72 percent of localisation. In the next 18 months, the brand looks forward to capture 100 percent mark that will not only help the company to be cost competitive but also make profits.

UM motorcycles currently has 64 dealerships in India which it plans to expand to 72 before the coming Diwali. The company manufacturers its bikes in India at present with its joint venture with Lohia Auto that took place in 2014. The alliance has been named UM Lohia two-wheelers.
