Bajaj is working on its first mass market all-electric bike; an electric scooter to follow

Bajaj is working on its first mass market focused electric bike that is expected to launch by 2020 and this model will be sold under the sub-brand christened as Urbanite. Not only a zero emission pure electric bike, but there will be an electric scooter on offer as well and this too will be sold under the new sub-brand.

Overall, the homegrown motorcycle manufacturer aims to launch a range of electric powered zero emission two-wheelers and all of them will be sold through the dedicated Urbanite sub-brand. Bajaj also discloses that it will initially focus on the premium bike segment and at later stage, the company will introduce more affordable two-wheelers. So far, Bajaj wants to become like Tesla in Indian two-wheeler market.

Considering the fact that India is rushing towards adopting zero emission pure electric mobility across the country by 2030, under the central government’s Mission EV 2030, Bajaj aims to grab a significant chunk in the two-wheeler segment of Indian auto market. Interestingly, Bajaj wants to roll out an electric powered three-wheeler as well, which will give the company an edge over its rivals.

Bajaj is not the only brand in the Indian two-wheeler market that is working on electric powered models. Country’s biggest two-wheeler brand Hero MotoCorp and another major company TVS too are working on their own zero emission products. As it looks, Indian electric two-wheeler market is about to see a fierce competitive environment in coming years. This could help in significantly reducing air pollution level across the country.

While Bajaj has already confirmed about a new sub-brand dedicated for the marketing of the electric two-wheelers, it is not sure, of these zero emission bikes and scooters will be sold through the regular Bajaj showrooms or there will be dedicated retail network. However, we hope to learn about it more in coming months.
