Toyota Selling 90% of Camry as Hybrid Models in India

Hybrid cars might not be as popular as the fully fossil fuel powered cars are in India, but it seems Indian customers are opening up toward the hybrid cars. The Japanese automaker Toyota has seen a steep rise of Camry hybrid sale in Indian market. In 2013 the Camry hybrids occupied 15% of the total sales volume, which shot up to 73% in 2014 and 86% last year in 2015. Last year Toyota Kirloskar Motors sold a total of 1024 units of Camry in Indian market, among which 879 units were hybrid models.

The number has been rising, which is proved by the sales of the Camry hybrids between first four months of this year. In between January to April, 2016 Toyota has sold Camry hybrids which served the 419 of the total sales volume, while the petrol powered version has sold only 44 units. Globally the Japanese automaker sold a total of 9 million hybrid models in last year. The Camry hybrid holds the largest share of this sales volume, while at the second place stands the Prius hybrid, which is also available in Indian market, as an imported product although.

Toyota Kirloskar Motors is the sole automaker present in India which assembles and sells hybrid models for the market. Toyota started locally assembling the Camry hybrid in its Bengaluru plant in August 2013. Toyota Kirloskar Motors believes that the demand for the hybrid models will increase in near future. Presently the top 10 metro cities have higher demand for the Toyota hybrid models.

A customer can avail Rs. 70000 cash discount on a Toyota Camry hybrid model thanks to the initiative by Indian government. In Delhi the Toyota Camry hybrid model is available at a price tag of Rs. 33 lakh (ex showroom, New Delhi). The Toyota Camry hybrid is sold at the largest number in Delhi region. The Toyota Prius hybrid on the other hand is available at a price tag of Rs. 38 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi). Interestingly, the car comes with a waiting period of 7 – 12 days only.
