Mercedes GLE 450 AMG Coupe Launched in India at Rs. 86.40 lakh; gets a potent 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine and a masculine appearance
The leader of the luxury car segment, Mercedes Benz, has revealed its first product of 2016 in India after introducing 15 new vehicles in the concluded year which catapulted its growth rate to 32%. The veil has been lifted off the GLE 450 AMG Coupe which will have a price tag of Rs. 86.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and commences the 12-product launch scheme the Stuttgart-based manufacturer has in the pipeline for this year. The five-seater SUV will be imported via CBU channel into the domestic market unlike the locally assembled GLE (M class facelift) that premiered last October. The coupe-ish SUV will be another valuable addition to the existing GLA, GLE and the GL Class utility vehicle portfolio.
The AMG Sport variant of the GLE 450 Coupe was first unveiled just a year ago at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show. It underlines Mercedes’ commitment in bringing fresh new products for India and of the current model range none of the vehicles are more than a year old. It will be pitted against its global rival, the BMW X6 xDrive40d with M body kit, which instigated the segment in the first place. The premium luxury SUV adapts a coupe-like roofline to stand apart from rest of its family of chunky 4x4s. The unconventional body style signifies the capability of the SUV as it will cater buyers who seek performance and handling of a coupe alongside the ruggedness and off-roading abilities of an utility vehicle.
The exterior of the sturdy GLE Coupe constitutes mono-slat diamond grille, 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, Multibeam Active LED headlamps, bigger airdams, aggressive AMG Sport body kit with larger forged rims and LED tail lamps. The poshness persists on the inside as the dual-tone interior has an eight-inch COMAND freestanding display, cruise control, premium leather and ambient lighting with sporty flat bottom steering wheel with music controls and Bluetooth telephony.
It features equipment such as electronically adjustable seats and headrests, panaromic sun roof, rear-view camera with guidance, dual-zone automatic climate control, adjustable and retractable ORVMs and DYNAMIC SELECT system. Safety technologies like adaptive breaking, Electronic Stability Program, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, etc have been made available.
Powering the GLE 450 AMG Coupe is a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine that puts out 362hp of maximum power output at 5500rpm and 516Nm of peak torque at 1800rpm. The engine is mated to the proven nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox that transfers power to all four wheels through a 4MATIC AWD system offered as standard with permanent 40:60 front/rear torque split. The chunky vehicle weighs at over 2,200kg but impressively it can do standstill to 100kmph in just 5.6 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph.
