The Cabriolet range in the Indian luxury market will be expanded by the leading automaker Mercedes Benz courtesy of the C300 and S500 drop-tops. Firstly the C300 Cabriolet: it will be made available to buy with a single engine option. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol motor is good enough to produce a maximum power output of 245 horsepower. It is not something new for India as you can find the same unit underneath the GLC300 luxury SUV.

The engine will be coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission in standard model and will get the option of Dynamic Select mode. The main rival for the Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet is the Audi A3 Cabriolet. The potent German machine has become the cheapest four-seater drop-top version as it goes on sale in our domestic market with price of Rs. 60 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The other Cabriolet version that is expected to garner more customers for Mercedes-Benz is the S500. As the name suggests, it will be based on the flagship S-Class, much like how the C300 is largely influenced on the exterior and interior by the latest entry-level C-Class sedan.

Priced at Rs 2.25 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), the S500 will derive power from the bigger 4.7-litre twin turbocharged V8 mill which is good enough to develop a maximum power of 442 horsepower and a massive 700 Nm of peak torque. The performance numbers will be directed to the rear wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox. On the outside, the S500 will be identical to the S-Class Coupe launched last year in India and the Maybach S500 which followed up soon.

It will have similar overall dimensions to the S-Class Coupe and the soft top is claimed to be the longest ever seen on a Mercedes. At speeds of up to 60 kmph, it can be raised or folded down in 20 seconds and works by thermotronic climate control system that assesses the conditions for roof operation.

The Mercedes logo on the trunk lid can be used to open the boot manually. An updated version of the E400 convertible with feature add-ons is expected soon as well. The S500 and C300 drop-tops are added to the growing range of Cabriolets like the SLC43 and the E 400 Cabriolet for the Indian luxury customers preferring to experience fresh open-top freedom on-the-go.
