Maruti Sells Nearly 20,000 Units of Ignis in Under Four Months

Since launching in January Maruti Ignis garnered close to 20k deliveries; the urban compact hatchback is powered by the notorious 1.2L petrol and 1.3L diesel engines

Derived from the i-M4 concept, the production version of Maruti Suzuki Ignis was unveiled first at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo amidst huge expectations, before getting launched in India in early January 2017. Ignis is a compact entry-level crossover retailed through NEXA dealerships and had a huge fan following even before its market entry. Standing epitome to its popularity is that 19,731 units were sold within four months of its market entry and the numbers are likely to increase by the looks of things.

The Ignis is the first vehicle from Maruti Suzuki to get e-booking and has a unique character to its own in terms of styling and market presence. Ignis gets standard dual airbags and ABS, 15-inch alloy wheels, Nexa safety shield, pre-tensioners, force limiter and isofix along with front and rear impact shield.

It comes with stylish LED projector headlamps (first for Maruti), carbon-fibre detailing, seven-inch touchscreen infotainment with mirror link, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Automatic transmission options available in both petrol and diesel engines while Allgrip 4WD system could be introduced later.

Aiming to attract young generation customers at affordable price range which starts from Rs.4.59 Lakh, the Ignis all set to begin a new trend for more ultra-compact SUVs to come in the near future from other volume-selling manufacturers as well. maruti suzuki ignis drive review front-20The sub-4m Ignis Premium urban compact car powered by the four-valves-per-head, inline, four-cylinder, DOHC petrol power unit which has a displacement of 1197 cc. The VVT, K-series petrol engine, also found under the engine bay of Swift, is capable of pushing out a maximum power output of 84 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm and delivers a good ARAI certified mileage of 20.89 Kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis to come with the 1.3 diesel engine as well with 75 PS of power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm peak torque at as low as 2,000 rpm and comes with 5-speed manual transmission as standard while a five-speed AMT, similar to Dzire automatic, is also offered in the mid 2 variant. Considering the weight and length of the car and same engines as the Baleno, petrol delivers a good milage of 20.89 km/l and diesel motor delivers 26.80 km/l.

Maruti’s huge ambitions of entering a new SUV market is finally coming true. Ignis will kick things up for the country’s largest car maker in this segment and the rest will be followed with a premium higher-level SUV. The interiors are very unique comparing to the current models in Maruti’s stable. It comes equipped with a premium dual-tone dashboard layout, an integrated touchscreen and contrast highlights on several elements. The top-of-the-range model is likely to feature SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. Other important stuff may include an audio system with AUX-in, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

The Ignis is also available with host of customization options as well. The five-seat configuration means it should provide good enough leg and headroom up front and rear. The adjustable rear seats will give provision to additional 165 mm legroom. The range of safety features the Ignis could be sold with are standard dual front airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD alongside ESP and automatic headlights as option.

The exterior features in the Ignis are chrome-lined grille, blacked-out A and B pillars, projector headlights, turn indicators on ORVMs, clam-shell bonnet, 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, bumpers with black inserts, rear mounted spoiler, windscreen wiper and flared rear arches, three-slats above rear wheel arch, etc. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis does have an appealing and cutesy exterior despite being quite boxy. It will be targetting more young buyers with loads of equipment and a well-crafted styling.

Ignis also support Apple CarPlay, offering Apple iPhone users various functions like making and taking calls, music playback and messaging, to be controlled through the car’s display. The system will also be equipped with a voice-recognition function and navigation.

Ignis has secured a three-star rating for entry-level standard safety equipment variant and five stars for the variant with the optional safety pack. Both models featured in the latest round of Euro NCAP had driver and passenger airbags alongside side head, chest and pelvis airbags up front.
