Mahindra & Mahindra has finally launched the long-awaited XUV300 in the Indian market on the Valentine’s Day

The subcompact SUV is priced aggressively against competitors as it costs between Rs. 7.9 lakh and Rs 11.9 lakh for the entry-level W4 and top-spec W8 (O) variants (all prices ex-showroom).

The XUV300 is the fourth try to grab a big pie in the subcompact SUV segment from Mahindra and having driven it already, we can say that it is the best one yet. Unlike the ladder frame construction in the TUV300, NovoSport and Quanto for that matter, the XUV300 is a monocoque SUV with use of 68 per cent high strength steel for rigidity and stiffness.

It’s also one of the safest Mahindra SUV you can buy courtesy of the presence of a plethora of standard safety and speed alert features. The high-spec XUV300 boasts segment-first seven airbags, heated wing mirrors, front parking sensors and disc brakes on all four wheels. They are complemented by ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Assist, Traction Control, and much more.

It comes with a choice of petrol and diesel engines with both producing most torque figures in the segment. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel mill that can also be found in the Marazzo produces 115 bhp and 300 Nm while the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit makes 110 bhp and 200 Nm.

The Mahindra XUV300 won’t be the most fuel-efficient model in its segment. This is owing to the segment-leading performance figures its engines offer. The petrol version will offer an ARAI-tested mileage of 17 km/l, while the diesel motor will provide 20 km/l.

The powertrains are mated to only a six-speed manual transmission as an automatic gearbox will debut later. The XUV300 just as the name suggests is a descendant of the bigger XUV500 in terms of looks despite being based on the X100 platform that also underpins SsangYong Tivoli.

Being a sub-4-metre SUV, the Mahindra XUV300 will measure less than four metres in length. With an overall length of 3,995 mm, the baby-XUV will be able to qualify for lower taxation, which should help its manufacturer price the model aggressively. Its overall width of 1,821 mm, however, makes it the widest model in its segment.

In comparison, the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, and Tata Nexon are 1,790 mm, 1,765 mm, and 1,811 mm wide, respectively. The new SUV has a wheelbase of 2,600 mm and a ground clearance of 180 mm. The boot space on offer will be 265 litres, which isn’t great but is adequate for a compact SUV.

Mahindra says the exterior styling is influenced by Cheetah, as it gets a prominent front grille with LED Daytime Running Lights flowing downwards to connect the fog lamps, which are housed in a sporty bumper with horizontal louvers. The rear end has horizontal LED tail lamps that are offered right from the base variant while 17-inch alloy wheels and two-tone colour scheme with floating roofline further enhance the overall stance of the SUV.
