Bentley Bentayga diesel can do zero to 100 kmph in 4.8 seconds and top out 270 kmph; comprises sophisticated triple-charging system

The Bentayga Diesel is the luxury brand’s first diesel production machine. It comprises of a triple-charged 4.0-litre V8 diesel engine alongside two twin-scroll turbochargers with an electrically driven supercharger developed in conjunction with Audi. It generates 435 horsepower and 900 Nm peak torque from just 1000rpm to 3250rpm – same peak torque as the Bentayga’s twin-turbo 6.0-litre petrol W12 motor.

It can do zero to 100 kmph in 4.8 seconds and top out 270 kmph. The electric supercharger needs 48V to power its 7kW motor and can spin from idle to 70,000 rpm in only 250 milliseconds. It feeds cylinders at low revs for instantaneous torque delivery and one exhaust valve closes to intensify the boost while the exhaust gases make the middle turbo work.

Bentley’s powertrain development boss Paul Williams said the three technologies that have enabled the firm to offer a diesel worthy of the brand are 48V supplementary electrical system powering the electric supercharger, triple-charging system and an intriguing exhaust package.

The triple-charging system already found in the Audi SQ7 uses identical engine providing boost at very low revs with the help of e-booster priming two twin-scroll turbochargers. The Bentley Bentayga standard model is propelled by an all-new 6.0-litre W12 Twin Turbo TSI petrol engine with Variable Displacement developing 608PS @ 5000-6000rpm and 900Nm of peak torque @1350rpm connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive.

It can accelerate from standstill to 100kph in an impressive four seconds and can go all the way to a top speed of 187mph (301km/h) according to Bentley. Fuel consumption is at a claimed 13.1 litres/100 km and it complies EU 6 and US LEV III emission standards with CO2 emission of 296 g/km. Bentayga features more than ten driver assistance systems for urban driving, longer distance touring and more robust off-roading.
