Hyundai officially unveiled the 2017 i10 facelift ahead of the Paris Motor Show late last September and the real car was up for spectators’ display much to the delight. The car features a stylish appearance compared to the outgoing model. Up for sale in European and other markets already, the hatchback is finally launched in India, mimicking the Euro-spec i10’s exterior largely.

For Hyundai, two models constantly pumping volumes. The i twins in the compact hatchback and premium segment have not aged much but in order to have a sustained sales growth, the South Korean brand brings upgrade with modern styling touches. The global markets have seen the i10 flaunting new active safety and connectivity features but for India its interior remains the same except for some necessary additions.

As it’s been over three years since the existing generation Grand i10 entered market, we expect the facelift to shake things up considerably in the pecking order in terms of sales.

The outgoing Era 1.2 Kappa VTVT base petrol was priced at Rs. 4.91 lakh and it went as high as Rs.6.99 lakh for the range-topping Asta 1.1 CRDi (O). The facelifted model surprisingly comes with an aggressive ex-showroom prices hike between Rs.20,000 and Rs. 40,000 over the old prices. The overall design will be retained while a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto introduced in mid and high spec variants. Apart from that, it features a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, an instrument cluster with analog dials and an updated digital MID. The car gets driver airbag as standard alongside reverse parking sensor and camera in higher grades.

The entry-level models will continue to have dual-tone beige and grey colour scheme while upholstery changes made higher up the equipment list.

Transmission duty will be done by a 5-speed manual in both and a 4-speed automatic gearbox only in petrol.

The South Korean company’s volume aspirations in terms of automatic sales could be realised with the new Grand i10 facelift. The cheapest automatic variant in Hyundai’s line-up, the 1.2 Kappa 79 bhp Petrol four-speed AT, is more likely to be joined by another automatic version supposedly fitted to the new 1.2 CRDi diesel in later stage of this year. The engines configured to return 19.7 kmpl petrol mileage and around 24.95 kmpl fuel economy for new 1.2 diesel variants.

The front fascia have the signature hexagonal front “cascading” grille with honeycomb mesh while the fog lamp enclosures have been thoroughly updated for increased sportiness with daytime running lights. The curvy headlamp design carried forward with wing mirrors shaped to direct airflow to the rear alongside boomerang shaped air inlets.

The side profile will remain as it currently is with high-end grades featuring door garnished molding and chrome-coated outside handles with smart key entry. Rear glass wiper, integrated thin roof spoiler with stop lamp, a new set of alloy wheels and rear combination lights will add character to the compact hatchback. The bumpers up front and rear have received changes to ensure an aggressive face.

Also the turn indicator integrated ORVMs, side moulding, blackened glass area are there to give it an upmarket appearance. A subtle crease runs from behind the front fender to the taillight in top-end models, and the door handles will come chrome garnished.

The proportions of the Grand i10 facelift remains identical to the outgoing model. It measure 3,765 mm in length, 1,660 mm in width, 1,520 mm in height and stay put with the wheelbase of 2,425 mm. The ground clearance of 165 mm and boot volume of 256 litres with 43 litres tank capacity remains identical to its predecessor.

The biggest competitors for the facelifted Grand i10 are Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ford Figo, Tata Tiago, the ageing Nissan Micra and forthcoming Honda Brio facelift while the recently launched Maruti Ignis and the Mahindra KUV100 are other competitors in the more or less same budget range.
