The small hatchback space is one of the highly competitive segments that can make or break a car maker’s destiny in the country. Its significance is so high and has made some of the established brands who they are in the domestic space. Despite being in the industry for only a few years, Renault’s clever move with the introduction of Kwid has reaped benefits in aplenty.

It is now the French company’s top-selling model and has repeatedly found itself ending up in the top 10 selling chart throughout 2016. Some manufacturers were watching the trend behind Kwid and responded sooner rather than later. Right up against it, Tata Motors entered the Tiago early last year and it rose to the fame as predicted.

General Motors will have had a close observation on the market scenario and thus decided to upgrade its Beat hatchback. Been around since 2010, the popularity of Beat cannot be understated but it constantly required updates along its lifespan which did not come into fruition. 2017 Chevrolet Beat India Launch

The updated Chevy Beat is expected to be launched in India in July ahead of the Essentia sedan. It is one of the five products along with new-gen Cruze, Essentia compact sedan, Beat crossover and Trailblazer facelift Chevy has planned to launch in the coming years.

Expect the prices to range between Rs. 4 lakh and Rs. 6 lakh (ex-showroom). Currently, eight variants are sold with two engine and one transmission options. Targeting young customers and sizeable volume sales, it could be offered with a range of customisation options as well in the near future taking advantage of its funky appeal.

2017 Chevrolet Beat Engine, Specification and Mileage

The new Beat small hatchback will share the same platform with the outgoing model. It will be available with the same petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine will be a 1.2 litre SMARTECH petrol engine, while the diesel variants will get power from a 1.0 litre TCDi engine.

The 1,199 cc DOHC 4V inline four-cylinder petrol engine makes 79 bhp at 6,200 rpm and 108 Nm of peak torque delivered at 4,400 rpm. The less powerful 936 cc three-cylinder turbocharged engine is good enough to produce a maximum power output of 57 bhp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 150 Nm at 1,750 rpm.

Both mills send power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox and there’s no AMT on offer. The petrol and diesel engines are expected to return close to 20 kmpl and 26 kmpl of mileage respectively.

The new Beat is based on the same platform as the outgoing model. Thus, expect it to proportionally come similar with the length of 3,640 mm, width of 1,595 mm and height of 1,520 mm. The ground clearance will stand at 175 mm while the wheelbase is measured at 2,375 mm. With bootspace of just 170 litres, it does lag behind in space factors compared to its main rivals.

The new Beat takes design cues from the Chevrolet Beat Activ concept showcased at the 2016 New Delhi Auto Expo as reassured by the spy pics. The new model gets a fresh sleeker front grille and new larger headlamps. The two part front grille comes adorned with chrome lining as well. The front bumper also comes in redesigned appearance. It looks beefy and the round fog lamps will get black accents around them on presumably top-end variants.

The new generation Chevy Beat is nothing but the evolutionary take on the outgoing model and will loosely depend on the latest Spark hatchback available in international markets. The side profile gets a blackened glass area, sleek character lines and with newly designed five-spoke alloy wheels.

The rear passenger door handle is positioned at the C pillar, a signature trait of the model, just like the outgoing product. At the rear profile second generation Beat features redesigned taillights. The registration plate is now placed on the reworked bumper as opposed to it being fitted on the tailgate in current version.

The interior of the new generation Beat will also have redesigned appearance. The American automaker showcased the Beat Activ and Beat Essentia concepts at 2016 New Delhi Auto. The new Beat comes taking design cues from the Essentia concept in particular on the interior side of things as can be seen from the spy shot.

It will feature a multifunction steering wheel as in the Essentia concept, sleek bike-inspired instrument console and Chevrolet MyLink2 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity operated likely on a seven-inch touchscreen.

The dual tone beige and black colour dashboard also sports a refreshed look with supposedly improved premium appeal. It means the outgoing model’s all-black theme will be ditched. Other important features are new instrument cluster, chrome insets around the AC louvres, etc.

2017 Chevrolet Beat Rivals

The new Beat hatchback will compete against Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Tata Tiago, Honda Brio, some variants of the highly promising Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the facelifted Hyundai Grand i10.
