The latest generation Toyota Innova Crysta took off where its predecessor left by garnering phenomenal sales in the premium MPV segment

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd launched the second generation of the iconic and segment-leading Innova MPV in both petrol and diesel versions back in May 2016. Initially introduced only with two diesel engines, Toyota understood the growing importance of a potent petrol engine and launched 2.7L petrol motor later before a special Touring Sport edition was added to the lineup. The Innova Crysta has all the bells and whistles to replicate the success of the original model and it has not disappointed so far. It has been priced between Rs. 13.85 lakh for the base variant of petrol and Rs.22.15 lakh for the range-topping model in diesel (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

The popularity of Innova Crysta is testament with the fact that over 74,000 units were retailed just last year. It is the best-selling model of the Japanese brand in the Indian market along with the Fortuner. The sales number underlines the bestselling status of the Innova Crysta in the premium MPV segment with strong YoY growth.

The new-gen MPV comes with option of either seven seat or eight seat configuration and is packed with host of new and updated features over the outgoing model. The stylish and modernised cabin is complemented by the looks on the exterior as Toyota created the Innova Crysta with an enticing upgrade package on the outside. Additionally, the new family of powerful GD engines with manual and automatic transmissions etch its position as one of the strongest people carriers ever in the market.

The Japanese auto conglomerate created Innova Crysta as a product of what it perceived from the Indian customers over the years while keeping the unique silhouette in tact. In the early months since its market entry, it was averaging over 8,000 units and had appreciably bettered the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga placed lower in the segment in succession. In the last one year, it has been averaging over 6,000 units monthly.

Proving that the craze of Innova among Indian buyers has never faded away, the Innova Crysta has been expected to sustain its leading role for a long time. Here is everything you should know about the all-new Toyota Innova Crysta:

Toyota Innova Crysta Engine & Specification

Power 150 PS at 3,400 rpm / 174 PS at 3,400 rpm / 166 PS
Torque 343 Nm at 1,400-2,800 rpm / 360 Nm at 1,200-3,400 rpm / 245 Nm

Under the bonnet, a brand new ‘GD’ series diesel engines paired to five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions propels the five-door MPV. Toyota also offers a 2.7-litre VVT-i petrol engine as well which was introduced in India later.

The 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV four-cylinder, inline, 16V diesel engine with VNT Intercooler produces 150 PS at 3,400 rpm and 343 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 2,800 rpm on MT while 2.8-litre GD engine delivers 174 PS at 3,400 rpm with 360 Nm of torque on the AT variants delivered between 1,200 and 3,400 rpm. The petrol engine is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder with Dual VVT-i producing 166 PS and 245 Nm of torque with MT and AT options.

The new “GD” engines, said to be 10% more efficient than the outgoing 2.5 and 3.0-litre diesel models returns 11 kmpl on city and 15 kmpl on highway. However, claimed mileage for both 2.4 & 2.8 diesel engines is 15.10 kmpl & 14.29 kmpl respectively while petrol engine delivers mileage close to 10 kmpl.

Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the Toyota Innova Crysta measures about 4,735 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, 1,795 mm in height and 2,750 mm in wheelbase. It’s 150 mm longer, 35 mm taller and 65 mm wider with identical wheelbase as the previous model.

Up front, the heart of the design is the new frameless dual-slat chrome grille housed in the hexagonal radiator assembly that leads into the sleeker LED projector headlamps. The wider bonnet announces an imposing stance with the character lines flowing into the grille unit. The front fascia extends out consequently with the traditional Toyota emblem in the centre and makes the previous generation model soft and outdated.

The unique shoulder line stretches from headlamp to tail lamp but the side profile is rather kept undisturbed while the newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels and the prominent wheel arches offer a compelling attentiveness. Despite keeping the wheelbase similar at 2,750 mm, Toyota increased the overall length by 150 mm for the new Innova and height by 35 mm but the resultant rear quarter looks rather disproportionate.

The kinked-out parallelogram-shaped rear glass area gives a sporty appearance and like at front, the rear profile gets a complete restyle with the straighter tail lamps replaced by horizontal split cluster integrated with the turn indicators.

It still features roof-mounted spoiler with integrated stop lights and a redesigned bumper with a roundish mono exhaust system. With these modifications, the fresh looking Innova Crysta highlights an all-new design philosophy and distinguishes itself from the original model in all the right agendas.

Six colour options made available are Super White, Alumina Jade, Avant Grande Bronze, Attitude Black, Silver Metallic and Dark Gray Mica Metallic.

The interiors of the Toyota Innova Crysta is closely aligned to that of the latest Fortuner’s dashboard with instrument panel getting a blue ambient light alongside wooden touches and steering mounted buttons feature on the top-end variants. The infotainment system comprises of DLNA, web browser, smartphone, Air gesture and Miracast. Eight inch touchscreen infotainment system, a chilled glovebox and automatic climate control are offered in the higher-spec variants as well for enhanced premium-ness.

Along with the advanced infotainment system with navigation, voice commands, USB, AUX-IN and Bluetooth connectivity, the Crysta MPV features dual-tone interior with silver accents, 16 or 17 inch alloy wheels and rank and reach adjustable steering. Other features include automatic climate control, one-touch power windows and illumination lamps, wood-finish on panels, smart entry and push-start button, automatic climate control, ambient LED lighting, etc.

Hill Start Assist, Vehicle Stability Control and curtain airbags can be found on “Q” top end whilst ABS, EBD, anti-theft system, door ajar warning, rear parking sensors, dual front airbags and driver knee airbag come as standard features.
