The new Honda Jazz – Will it make an impact in the Hatchback segment?

The Honda Jazz has always been widely acclaimed hatchback for a spacious and fun to drive car, though it has been on the expensive side, considering the previous generations until date in India. However, after discontinuing the model some time before, the Japanese automaker is now making a huge comeback to the market with a bang.

Honda says this time they surely learned their lesson and has primarily focused on localization of the premium hatchback which will aid in a competitive pricing and expects the hatchback to be a breakthrough in the segment.

Honda this time also has another trick up its sleeve to woo Indian customers. The new Honda Jazz is now the 2nd most fuel efficient car to go on sale in the country which now returns an ARAI certified mileage of 27.3 km/l. These figures are just crazy, as it is just a shade below the Maruti Celerio diesel’s fuel efficiency figure of 27.62 km/l.

The 2015 Honda Jazz certainly offers more performance than the Celerio, as the hatchback is lighter and efficient than its predecessor, although the previous gen being strong.

Under the bonnet is an Honda City sourced 1.5-litre Earth Dreams i-DTEC diesel engine which is tuned to produce 100HP at 3600 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM, mated to the same 6-speed manual gearbox.

Petrol version continues to come and there is no doubt in it. The 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol mill, paired to 5-speed manual produces 90 PS at 6000 RPM and 110 Nm of torque at 4800 RPM, also comes with a CVT transmission option. Speaking of mileage on The Honda Jazz petrol, the car returns an ARAI certified 18.7 km/l on the manual gearbox.

Meanwhile, the automatic is even more fuel efficient returning 19 km/l. All these figures have been done by multiple upgrades to the engine, its oil flow design and measuring the outlet water temperature through a new additional thermostat.

In comparison to the competition, the Hyundai Elite i20 diesel returns an ARAI certified figure of 22.54 km/l and the Volkswagen Polo returns just 20.4 km/l. The Honda Jazz is all set to change the dynamics of the premium hatchback market with its offering, as the package is appealing and pricing is all set to be competitive.
